Programming, Laboratory and Office-Based Skills

I have used Matlab and GENESIS (GEneral Neural SImulation System) extensively during my PhD studies. Java was the language taught on the computation MSc and my dissertation project project was built using JSP. I have also built several websites using PHP and Python/Django and have experience with setting up a subversion version control system.

During my time at GSK, I have acted as a study director and monitor for electrophysiological Purkinje fibre assays and patch clamp assays upon HEK and CHO cell lines, modified to over-express hERG channel proteins. I have gained invaluable experience of good laboratory practice (GLP), cell culture, data analysis and other office and lab based skills. I was also the environment, health and safety (EH&S) forum representative and a first aider for the group.

During my PhD, my work has been at the nexus of neuroscience and computation involving electrophysiological recording from brain tissue followed by detailed compartmental neuronal modeling of the target cells.

I am fully computer literate in both Windows and Linux office suites.

Personal Profile

I consider myself to be a reliable, honest, polite, open and friendly individual. I am conscientious and care about the work I do and its effect upon the wider world. I have actively participated in and been a representative of several committees while a student and while in working for GSK which has helped to develop my social and leadership skills and has also given me experience of responsibility and working in a team. During my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing short stories and visit the gym and swimming pool regularly. I also enjoy squash and bouldering when I get the chance. I spend more time on my computer than is strictly healthy, have a genuine interest in the recent advances from all areas of science and technology and like to keep up with the latest information, and so I enjoy reading New Scientist and browsing scientific news web-sites. I live in Manchester with my fiancée, Marjan, and a tortoise called Yoda.
